It is becoming clear that leaders in both the Senate and the
House want change to online gambling laws in the US. The latest example of such
comes from Senator Robert Menendez, who has proposed legislation that would
legalize online poker in the country.
The move comes a couple of months
after Representative Barney Frank proposed legislation that would legalize and
regulate all Internet gambling. The two lawmakers are both actively pursuing the
reversal of the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act.
The UIGEA
was put in place back in 2006, and it has caused problems ever since its
inception. Financial institutions and lawmakers alike are overwhelmed with
trying to decipher what is and is not legal online gambling.
Poker has
always been a game that toes the line when it comes to its legality. Many
believe poker is a game of skill, where players use their skill to make various
moves throughout the game. Others, however, believe the game falls more under
the luck category.
"Whether poker is luck or skill should not be the
issue that lawmakers are addressing," says observer Kelly Kraus, "the real issue
is that online gambling, whether skill or luck, should be made legally available
to people in the US."
Representative Frank believes that way of
thinking, which is why he has already attempted once last year to overturn the
UIGEA. That attempt was denied by a majority Republican Congress. This year,
Frank and Menendez will have the majority in their respective chambers to try
and change the online gambling laws.
